I spent a couple nights between Christmas and New Year’s taking care of my inner introvert. This involves making myself an apéritif, followed by dinner, then sinking into the couch with a digestif and having a Wong Kar Wai retrospective; “Days of Being Wild”, “In the Mood for Love” and “2046”. The midnight noodle stall scenes in “In the Mood For Love”, where Su Li-Zhen and Chow Mo-Wan exchanged meaningful, intense gazes, gave me a noodle craving and planted an idea in my head.
Juzo Itami’s Tampopo + good friends + cocktails + craft beers + instant noodle party = fab way to spend the last Saturday of 2017! Tampopo is a classic: 80s Japanese flick about a woman on a quest to create the perfect bowl of ramen, with entertaining side stories ranging from the erotic foodie adventures of a Yakuza guy and his girlfriend, to a manners class, to a dying mother’s last meal, this film always leaves me hungry.
A few Facebook Messenger exchanges later, we had a game plan. Andreas + Amy took care of craft beers and cocktails, Astrid + Abi brought snacks and extra spicy instant noodles, Anna + Franco brought veggies, Alex more instant noodles from his stash, me everything else.
That last 2017 Saturday was cold and rainy and miserable too. Perfect weather for noodle soup!

Packs of Shin Ramyun.

Things to pimp up your instant noodles.

Soft-boiled eggs are always a good idea with noodle soup.

Leek dumplings!

This Jasmine IPA that Andreas + Amy sourced was especially nice!

Andreas made basil smash cocktail and gifted me with this 60s DDR bottle — schweet!

Friends in food coma, watching Tampopo
Why didn’t I think of this earlier?! Screening a foodie film + good friends + eating together FTW! I think I might make this a regular thing! Maybe one of those things I can do on the last Sunday of the month with friends. I’ll get the film, figure out the menu and people can decide what they’ll bring.
Next Food+Film screenings:
- Ang Lee’s “Eat Drink Man Woman”
- “The Lunchbox”
- Jean Jeunet’s “Delicatessen” — yes, yes, I’m aware how dark this is
- “Like Water For Chocolate”
- “The Search for General Tso”
- “Marie Antoinette”
